I had been putting off listening to this course because although I had purchased it with the idea that learning more about grammar might be useful, I felt certain that it would be a long slog.Totally wrong.Professor Drout is an engaging and informative educator. He is, to be honest, extremely funny. I found myself eager to listen to the lectures, and along the way I found myself learning quite a bit, such as how to avoid the dreaded comma splice in this sentence by putting a comma before the "and."I've listened to Drout's courses on Anglo-Saxon history and the history of the English language. Both were equally entertaining and informative. Drout puts his ample knowledge of the history of language to good use by using history to explain why seemingly arbitrary rules of English grammar exist.For example, I remember being a young lawyer and spending some time puzzling over the expression "If I were you." Every logical circuit in my brain said that it should obviously be "if I was you," and, yet. I knew that was somehow wrong. Eventually, I discovered that this was an example of the "subjunctive mood." However, it wasn't until Drout that I learned that the "were" of this sentence is a fossil from the Old English subjunctive system and represents a word that language used to express a conditional state. Everything else is gone, but this one word remains.Fascinating.Likewise, I finally know what a dangling participle is.Drout offers much information and lots of good advice. Besides, he's really funny. If you have any interest in language or writing, this is a great lecture series to listen to.

Through this audiobook, professor Drout takes us on a journey, not through boring English dogma, but rather through the history and evolution of English over hundreds, and at points thousands of years. He talks about some of the inconsistencies we have in English today, and how many of these originated from consistencies in older forms of the language.Through this course I have learned that grammar is both interesting and deeply understandable, if you look at language as something that evolves slowly over time, and not something static, prescriptive, and unchanging... which is exactly how grammar is taught most of the time.And this is where Prof. Drout's genius and unique perspective comes in handy, because Dr Drout is an expert in Old English, and thus he has a far deeper insight into the evolution of English than the average person.Thank you Professor Drout. It really was a pleasure.

About the Author
Dr. Leithwood is Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy at OISE/University of Toronto. His research and writing concerns school leadership, educational policy and organizational change. Dr. Leithwood has published more than 70 referred journal articles, and authored or edited more than thirty books. For example, he is the senior editor of both the first and second" International Handbooks on Educational Leadership and Administration "(Kluwer Publishers, 1996, 2003). His most recent books (all with Corwin Press) include "Leadership With Teachers' Emotions In Mind "(in press), "Making Schools Smarter" (3rd edition, 2006) and "Teaching for Deep Understanding "(2006). Among his current research projects is a large, five-year, Wallace Foundation study, with colleagues, aimed at determining how state, district and school-level leadership influences student learning. Dr. Leithwood is the recent recipient of the University of Toronto's "Impact on Public Policy" award.
